Home maintenance takes time and money, so updating or replacing things before they are worn out is really throwing away time and money. But how do you know how long things are supposed to last? Here are some guidelines.
The exterior of your home has a lot of things that can wear out and need replacing. Items like windows, doors, decking and so on. Each has a lifespan.
For instance, your windows can last anywhere from 20 years to more than 100, depending on what they are made from.
Plastic frame windows last anywhere from 20-30 years, wooden frame windows can last more than 100 if properly cared for.
Vinyl and screen doors can last anywhere from 20-40 years.
Your deck has a lifespan of about 20 years, same as your asphalt driveway.
The patio can last anywhere from 20-50 years.
But you’ll be painting the exterior much more often since exterior paint lasts about 5-7 years.
The interior has a whole lot of things that need maintenance or can wear out.
For instance, your mattress will last anywhere from 8-15 years, your carpet should last 10-15 years and interior paint 7-10 years.
Your wood floors should last at least 20-30 years, radiators 5-30 years, depending on type, and smoke detectors 10 years.
In the kitchen your countertops should last generations.
If you have vinyl flooring it should last 30-50 years.
In your bath, your tub/shower should last 25-50 years, while the shower head a lifetime.
Cabinets, 20-50 years; porcelain toilet seat and bowl, 50 years; sink, 15-50 years; and linoleum flooring 20-25 years.
Of course, all of this depends on how well you maintain each. Not taking care of maintenance can shorten the lifespan, sometimes considerably, but take good care of your home and you can even surpass the numbers above.
