Start in the basement

Best to start at the bottom and work your way up. If you have a basement or crawlspace under your home go down or under there and look for problems. You want to look for things like mold, damage from mice or termites, water damage or cracks in your foundation. Inside, check walls for peeling or flaking paint, bowing, dampness or smells. All of this means serious water damage. Water can be coming from the roof or plumbing inside the home. Left alone it can mean mold. Black mold can cause serious health issues. Find the cause of the water and fix it before you have to have mold remediation done.

Inspect your roof at least twice a year

Look for dark spots, dips or bowing. Check wood work for rot, problems with insects and issues around where electric lines, cable lines or other places where holes have been cut to allow access (like chimney pipes, etc.). Check shingles for curling edges, stains, broken or missing shingles. If you see any of this, call a roofing professional immediately. Small problems can be addressed before they become a total roof tear off.
